Six Rounds, Five Apps and No Participation Trophies
The era when short-drama apps were a fringe curiosity passed some time ago. Sensor Tower recorded about $700M in worldwide in-app revenue for the category in Q1 2025, and the US generated 49% of it. By Q1 2026 the quarterly figure https://shortreels.org/ had reached about $750M, and the total for 2025 came in at roughly $2.8–3B. ReelShort, DramaBox, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave are the five names that dominate the conversation, and any shopper who has searched a store for a short reels app has come across at least one of them. On the surface they seem identical, with vertical episodes, a cliffhanger every minute or two and a weekly pass sitting behind the paywall. What you pay and where you can watch hinge on how they differ beneath the surface, in ownership, pricing, platforms and extras. We put them through six rounds and named a winner in each, relying on only store listings, company terms and published industry data as of September 2026.
The Side-by-Side Comparison Grid
Ahead of the rounds, take a look at the entire field on one screen. Prices are the figures shown in the US App Store as of September 2026, and they vary by country, platform and promotion. Install counts come from each app’s Google Play listing. On market share, the figures are Media Partners Asia estimates for the microdrama market outside China. We would rather leave a gap than guess, so wherever no reliable source published the figure, the cell says « not reported ». Use the grid as your scoreboard and treat the rounds below as the commentary.

Round 1: Ownership and Size
As the incumbent, ReelShort still holds the most weight. Backed by China’s COL Group and based in Sunnyvale, Crazy Maple Studio launched it in August 2022, and MPA puts its share at about 29% of the market outside China. Per MPA estimates, its 2025 revenue reached $785M, with $1.05B projected for 2026. Launched in April 2023 and now holding about 21%, DramaBox is run by Singapore’s StoryMatrix as a subsidiary of Beijing Dianzhong Technology. In Q1 2025, Sensor Tower showed ReelShort ahead $130M to $120M, but by Q1 2026 the two were even at roughly $140M each, with DramaBox ranked first. DramaWave (often mistyped as « dreamwave ») is the youngest app here, but it already holds about 13%, and reportedly its annualized revenue exceeded $700M by Q2 2026. My Drama is the minnow, with 5M+ Android installs, but it is the only one with Fox Entertainment as a shareholder. ShortMax operates from Hong Kong and appears to be the same app as ShortTV from Jiuzhou Culture. For context, GoodShort holds about 6% and sits just outside this lineup. Winner: ReelShort, on market share, but only narrowly.
Round 2: Pricing
Nowhere else do the apps seem so alike. On the US App Store, ReelShort, ShortMax, My Drama and DramaWave all sell a weekly pass at about $19.99, and each one renews automatically. DramaWave’s weekly VIP starts at $7.99, and ShortMax also lists a $9.99 « Weekly Pass Pro ». DramaBox goes a different route: auto-renewing memberships at $5.99, $17.99 and $19.99, plus special offers from $4.99. The only verified monthly plan in these US listings, DramaWave’s monthly VIP at $36.99, is the standout. Four weeks of a $19.99 weekly pass add up to about $80, which makes a monthly plan at less than half that the better buy for steady watchers. Winner: DramaWave, because its monthly plan undercuts four weekly renewals by a wide margin. The number on your screen may be different, because prices change by country, platform and promotion.
Round 3: Watching for Free
When it comes to free viewing, the marketing grows loud and the details get thin. According to ReelShort’s own blog, the first 5 to 15 episodes of a series are usually free, and one rewarded ad unlocks two premium episodes. A seven-day check-in streak earns 100+ coins, but free reward coins usually expire, whereas paid coins do not. The easiest legitimate way to sample a reel short drama without paying is through ReelShort’s official channels on YouTube, TikTok and Dailymotion. DramaBox has free options too, but its exact figures for free episodes, ad caps and check-in coins appear only in third-party guides. Keep away from look-alike sites, modded APKs and « unlimited coins » generators, which are unofficial and never a safe shortcut. The winner: ReelShort, by a clear margin.
Round 4: Where You Can Watch
Screens are where these apps really diverge. ReelShort supports iPhone, iPad, Apple silicon Macs, Vision Pro and Android, and it also streams in a browser at reelshort.com, with progress that syncs across devices. DramaWave’s verified presence is its iOS and Android apps, and DramaBox’s website mostly sends you back to the app. The ShortMax domain forwards to the ShortTV website, so web browsing is possible there too. The trump card belongs to My Drama, with an Apple TV app for tvOS 18 or later, something ReelShort’s App Store listing does not show. If all you need is a shorts app on your phone, any of the five will do. Winner: ReelShort overall, though My Drama claims the living room.
Round 5: Catalog and Originals
No rival touches ShortMax on raw numbers. The app advertises 50,000+ dramas in 19 languages; as of January 2024 the company behind ShortTV had made more than 600 mini-dramas for overseas markets, most of them dubbed Chinese adaptations. Reports say more than 80% of DramaWave’s newly released content is AI-generated, and the app advertises 30,000+ dramas in 18 languages. ReelShort wins on recognizable hits, including The Double Life of My Billionaire Husband and Fated to My Forbidden Alpha, both of which went viral in November 2023. An LA production team and originals such as Fake Dating My Rich Nemesis are DramaBox’s response. Since Fox has committed to 200+ vertical titles over two years, My Drama has the most interesting pipeline. Winner: ShortMax, by sheer volume.

Round 6: Extras and the Fine Print
This one belongs to DramaWave by a distance. No other app in this comparison is verified to offer offline viewing, and its App Store listing promises offline downloads, on-screen comments and 1080p video. ReelShort’s cross-device sync ranks as the next most useful perk for viewers who switch between phone and laptop. Also take a look at the fine print, which varies more than the prices do. Deleting the app does not cancel your subscription on any of these apps, so cancel in App Store or Google Play settings instead. ShortMax’s terms say refunds are not given « unless the paid product/service is unusable », and My Drama forfeits coins after 12 months of inactivity. Winner: DramaWave.
Best For: The Final Verdict
No single short drama app wins every round, which means the best choice depends on how you watch. Best for Apple TV is My Drama, the one app here with a verified tvOS version and the only one with Fox-produced originals. Best for web viewing is ReelShort, thanks to a full browser player and progress that follows you between devices. ShortMax’s claimed 50,000+ dramas dwarf everything else in the grid, making it best for sheer volume. DramaWave is best for commuters and steady bingers, since it combines offline downloads with a $36.99 monthly plan. Ranked first by Sensor Tower in Q1 2026 and picked for Disney’s 2025 Accelerator class, DramaBox is best for backing the current revenue leader. For free, legitimate sampling, ReelShort is best again, with its ad unlocks, check-in coins and official social channels. Feeling tempted by all five? Choose one, cancel the weekly pass you are not using and let the cliffhangers wait a day.
